Yellow Cat (poem for purring)

Yellow Cat

Lurid yellow feline
reclining in a half-doze
on the chaise-longue.
Claws semi-extended,
occasionally sleep-tufting
threadbare velour. Nose
sensing the allure of
slo-mo dream-mice
tiptoeing by an idle paw.

Shedding clods and drifts
of yellow fur, he snoozes
with concentrated ease,
snore-purring. The fluff
floats up with disdainful
dust-motes, bobbing
in dawn-light. Settling
decisive in heavy
curtain swags,
which bear down,
condescending to cats.

Lurid yellow feline,
glowing like he’s been
dipped in honey, then rolled
in pollen. Or English mustard.
He stretches, purrs on.
Maybe even the colour
of home-made custard.
Unfurled to full length
occupation of the chaise.

  1. Slo-Mo dream mice. Love it.
I have a dawg who chases no-mo killer wabbits. :)

  2. Love cats, love your poem. Win win :-)

  3. “dripped in honey – rolled in pollen”, bloody brilliant, Holly! :) x

  4. “dipped” in honey, danged words coming out faster than I can type :)

  5. Hollyanne – I love this poem and I love cats. You described the “yellowness” of Cat with such vividness (vividousity – Vididity). …Gary

  6. “glowing like he’s been
    dipped in honey, then rolled
in pollen. Or English mustard” Love your colorful imagery, Holly! :)

  7. That made me really ‘homesick’ for a cat again – you capture that languorous, captivating, self-absorbed creature perfectly!

  8. Dipped cat. Love the last section. Reminds me when our own ginger tom was dipped in creosote (accidentally) He was lucky to make it!

  9. Ahh I loved this so much, if I was a cat I would be purring! Great post, thanks for sharing :)
