Their Song

Their Song

She tells you it’s their love song.
Plays it on repeat in her bedroom.
Put his favourite perfume on.

She croons it like a love song.
Big eyes and mouth wide open.
Always keeps her phone turned on.

They’re playing in her bedroom.
Only worth living if somebody
is loving you.” This is their song.

She calls me when he’s gone.
Tears on repeat in her bedroom.
Says, “This is our idea of fun.

Waiting again in her bedroom.
Telling herself he’s not wrong.
She still thinks it’s a love song.

This poem contains lines from “Video Games” by Lana Del Rey (the ones in quotes and italics). It always strikes me how this song at first hearing can sound like a tender love song, but on closer listening, it gives quite a bleak picture of a relationship… And that potential misunderstanding is what I wanted to write about. I’m sure Lana will never set eyes on this, but I hope she wouldn’t mind me “borrowing” her lyrics (as copyright of course remains with her). Thanks Lana!

  1. I don’t think she’d mind at all! Well done!

  2. She’s so cool, she’d be delighted ~ really interesting contrasts / conflict / denial in this.

  3. A lot of repeated refrains in people’s lives! Well wrought. k.

  4. sad, cruel and sad. Beautiful it made me think. I had to read it twice. xxx

  5. I got her album for Xmas – very good – Happy New Year and look forward to reading more poems Holly (plus buying a book if you put one out!)

    • Happy New Year to you too and glad to hear you like her music too. It’s all rather “dark”, but that appeals to me… As to the book, well, I’m working on it… a couple of poems (all being well) set to go in magazines this year, so it’s all going in the right direction… :)

  6. Hi Holly-Anne, I know it’s late but I nominated you for the “Blog Of The Year” award. Check it out:

  7. This reminds me of a cyber/sex relationship… Congratulations on your awards and upcoming publications.

  8. Considering your writing, I can only believe that Lana should feel honoured. Perhaps you could send this to her.

  9. Don’t know the song yet but your poem already explains very well what you say in the extra text. It’s great how pop/rock keeps informing us, feeding us, isn’t it? (Still haven’t found a better rhyme on “headphones on” than “Marillion” though :-) )
