Snow-Felled

Posting an old one from last year, partly as a test as I’m having some techie issues with the blog and awaiting comments from the WP support team. If you’ve had problems reaching this page, many apologies…. I’m on the case. And also, new stuff will hopefully appear soon, once I’ve ironed out the glitches. In the meantime, here’s that re-post…

Snow-Felled

I wonder how long it would take?
If you were knocked out, flat on your back
on the top of the Beacon, in a blizzard:
unconscious, unmoving, unprotected.
I wonder how long it would take

for the falling white to cover you?
Smother you. Blanket your form.
A horizontal lying snowman,
featureless and silent.
A shiftless drift around you.
No snow angels to guard you.
A January unmourned burial mound.

I wonder how long it would take?
People know all about your nocturnal
wandering ways. Wannabe Heathcliff
swaying to howl on our hilltops.
Smalltown eccentric, silly old pisshead.
Maybe this time your whiskey-coat
wasn’t quite enough
to keep you warm.

Maybe the elements,
the wind, the sleet, the ice,
are not the friends you glorified.
Not that you knew.
Maybe you just had a little lie down.

  1. Everything seems alright here. Hope you get things fixed soon.

  2. I hope your problems are resolved. In the meantime, I did enjoy this!

    • Fingers and toes crossed… I confess I’ve been a little “missing in action” blog-wise this week, but I’m hoping to catch up a bit on reading round tonight. Glad you liked this one – I have rather a fondness for it I admit… ;)

  3. Seems fine to me Holly – if you haven’t seen it yet Terry Cotter reviewed The Thought Fox! A few of my friends are really enjoying your work too!

    • Yeah, seems to be resolved, so must get some new stuff up. Thanks for the feedback and lovely to hear others are enjoying too. Yay! I must pop over and see what Mr Cotter has to say on Hughes… Cotter is my new arbiter of good taste…

  4. I was one of those – couldn’t see your blog. So glad to see you again!

  5. I got it by hitting the title this time.

  6. Liked it the first time round, good to see it again :) No probs here re accessing your blog. I did get three posts from you via email with the same title that went nowhere … last weekend this was … thought nothing of it other than mild curiousity … it hasn’t happened again …

    • Those were test posts to try and work out what was happening. The problem didn’t appear to affect email subscribers, just how the post appeared in the “reader”. But hopefully all resolved now, so normal service shall resume… Didn’t like to post any new stuff until I was certain anyone who wanted to could easily access it.

      • Lea in France told me she’d had problems with Reader too … but, like you, hers is sorted out now. I guess these glitches happen ~ I don’t want one, though! ;)

Glad it’s sorted for you :)

  7. I love the way this poem draws to a close. I can’t quite describe it. There’s something so soft in the final line, but it’s a jarring softness somehow. I could read it over and over. It’s brilliant.

  8. As always, I enjoyed the poem. The snowman, here today and tomorrow…

Here is to both of us getting our Word Press issues sorted!

  9. all seems good Holly and as to the poem……….. brill!

    • Thanks Willow – it’s something of a relief to hear that it’s all looking normal again to people. I’m much better at thinking about the poetry than the technology! ;)

      • OH! yes I hate technology sometimes and I was heart broken when my wordpress account was closed to me… to me !!! EEEEK I wrote a snivelling creeping email to the IT nerds er experts who admitted it was amistake and let me back in!! XXXX

      • Oh dear – I would’ve been inconsolable! I’ve not had any explanation as to what was going wrong with my page, but I guess it could’ve been a lot worse. For a free service, it’s pretty good… Mostly… ;)
