Hollyanne’s Culinary Guide To “Things On Toast”
If you burn it a bit too black,
slap on some baked beans
for camouflage. Charcoal
is good for digestion, right?
Slather on swags of butter,
melt into mouth-slurpy pools.
The proper stuff on Sundays.
Firesides on dark afternoons.
Cheese to ooze and bubble.
Splattered with brown sauce
or red. Supper or insomnia,
cheese brings frisky dreams.
Pâté: fancy for a gourmet day.
Duck’s liver, a tang of orange.
Smoked mackerel. Or a taste
of childhood, potted fish paste.
Peanut butter, either crunchy
or smooth. Strawberries smear
jammy gits. Raspberries blow
their pips to stick in sweet teeth.
Glossy, rich chocolate spread,
forever the ultimate in comfort.
Some even has added protein,
so that makes it healthy. Nuts.
And finally, my classic choice:
dark, messy and controversial.
Dividing families and marriages.
Marmite. And tonight it’s all mine.
Ooooh! Delicious!
A fellow Marmite fan then Joe?
More the idea of food period!
Ah, food…
Though hope you occasionally get something more interesting than toast…. (even though I seem to live on the stuff – not much of a kitchen wizard here!)
I prefer either orange marmalade or honey myself.
Yum! I can’t believe I missed those two out – used to dislike marmalade as a child, but it’s somewhat grown on me as I’ve got older. Dunno why….
Mouth watering, Holly, and I love the phrase: cheese brings frisky dreams…really? lol
Oh it does indeed!
Hmm…
You tease! I haven’t had breakfast yet… lol
Perhaps some cheese inspired dreams tonight?
Ah, but the French cheeses you must get would be too good to merely toast!
Peanut butter and jam, oooh, yes, every time!
Really? You can keep that Marina – all to yourself. I know I’m supposed to be missing out on one of the world’s greatest food combos, but… no, I like my jam on it’s own. Mmmmm… raspberry jam!
Love it , love… mind you I HATE Marmite! But ever since I stumbled upon your words!! You are just so wonderful at taking every day life and writing epic meaning into it all….. I just wish I could find my niche though I am not bad at doom and gloom!!
xxxxx
Gosh, I don’t think there’s much meaning in this one – for once, just literally about toast!
I think we’re always looking for our niche – and learning all the time. That’s the joy of it I think.
I love burnt toast with plenty of butter in ot
Hmmm… depends how burnt.
BURNT
only on one side mind.
Very specific! lol. You can keep that though – it doesn’t appeal. As long as you enjoy it, that’s the main thing …
