Hollyanne’s Culinary Guide To “Things On Toast”

Hollyanne’s Culinary Guide To “Things On Toast”

If you burn it a bit too black,
slap on some baked beans
for camouflage. Charcoal
is good for digestion, right?

Slather on swags of butter,
melt into mouth-slurpy pools.
The proper stuff on Sundays.
Firesides on dark afternoons.

Cheese to ooze and bubble.
Splattered with brown sauce
or red. Supper or insomnia,
cheese brings frisky dreams.

Pâté: fancy for a gourmet day.
Duck’s liver, a tang of orange.
Smoked mackerel. Or a taste
of childhood, potted fish paste.

Peanut butter, either crunchy
or smooth. Strawberries smear
jammy gits. Raspberries blow
their pips to stick in sweet teeth.

Glossy, rich chocolate spread,
forever the ultimate in comfort.
Some even has added protein,
so that makes it healthy. Nuts.

And finally, my classic choice:
dark, messy and controversial.
Dividing families and marriages.
Marmite. And tonight it’s all mine.
