Baby Ghoul

Baby Ghoul

Little spook in the supermarket.
Pointy black hat bent askew.

Dying to fly the skiddy aisles,
on her borrowed broomstick.

Her practiced cackle echoes
as she hunts down
bargain eye of newt.

A sugar-demon, possessed,
she twitches on Daddy’s arm.
Wants more treats than tricks.

“What do ghosts have for tea?”
“Ooh! Look, Daddy! Pumpkins!”
“Why can’t I get a black cat?”
“But Mummy said I could…”

Green-cheeked baby-ghoul:
would glow shiny in the night.
She won’t find that out for now,
‘cause she’s a bit scared
of the dark. But don’t tell.

She helps pack bobbing apples
in crackly carrier bags
as Daddy counts
out some discount vouchers
for the till lady.

If she’s a very good witch,
maybe, just maybe, she’ll get
that black kitten for Christmas.

“Do witches have Christmas?
Daddy, do they?”

Little spook in the supermarket:
they’ll leave the landing light on
for as long as you need.

  1. Oh Holly this is fab! It reminds me of one you wrote last Christmas, I think it was, about a little one after some festivity; it may have been a nativity play or something, but I remember her having a wonky star on her head and being all sticky. Great stuff! 😊 X

  2. I like the connection with Christmas, useless as it is.
