Light Bulb Moment

Light Bulb Moment

Don’t know what it is at first.
Cold globe spreading my palm
like a glass mushroom top.

Mystery prize in my handbag’s
not always lucky dip.

It’s the old fashioned type.
They don’t sell them anymore.
Not so energy efficient.

Now used and burned out.
Dark-smudged inside.
It’s had its time.

I hope it went with a pop.

Though I don’t remember
or know why I have it
or even what scenes
it illuminated.

Replaced in a hallway,
the foot of steep stairs,
in a house I don’t know
as well as I maybe should.

It gathers warmth in my hand,
its secrets enclosed like smoke.

  3. A fitting tribute to the old-style bulbs – those new critters don’t do it aesthetically for me at all!
Love the lines: Now used and burned out. / Dark-smudged inside. / It’s had its time.
